Best Practice for Protecting a Newly Installed Screed Floor

Read our 'how to' guide on protecting your floors....

1. Ideally do not place anything on the floor for up to 7 days during initial curing and don’t attempt to clean the floor in the first 7 days.

2. After taking all the effort, time and skill to lay a perfectly flat screed you could still score an own goal if it is not properly protected from ambient weather conditions and construction traffic before laying the final floor finish. Although mixture constituents, including admixtures, additives, and resins, usually contribute to the curing and drying potential of the screed, appropriate protection must be planned and applied to all installed screeds.

3. After 7 days of laying the screed floor you may lay Proguard Polypropylene Floor Protection.

  • This woven polypropylene product provides excellent tear resistance and is laminated to provide a waterproof barrier.
  • As the rolls are 2m wide they can be used to cover large areas quickly, to provide efficient protection.
  • The slip-resistant and waterproof material performs effectively over the life of a project.
  • This is a very competitive form of floor protection

4. Anyone who is laying this floor protection needs to ensure that the material is overlapped by at least 5 centimetres to ensure the floor is not exposed.  Proguard Cloth Tape should be used for joining the material and perimeter edges.  Cut the polypropylene with a knife or scissors when necessary.

5. We cannot emphasise strongly enough how important it is to adhere to screed drying times. It is tempting to assume that dry-to-the-touch means dry enough to lay a floor, but the consequences of ignoring drying times can be distressing and expensive for your client.

6. Leave the protection in place for approx. 3 weeks after it has been installed.

7. Before the final floor polish the protection should be removed and the floor mopped using cold clean water.  We recommend this is done approx. 3 days before polishing.

8. Leave the floor free from traffic for the 48 period before polishing.
